Aerobic Training

Aerobic training and aerobic fitness: what is it?  Why would I want to implement it?  We answer these questions and more below in simple terms.

What is it?

Aerobic fitness is the energy system that provides the majority of production for any activity lasting longer than 60 seconds or 1 minute.

This is also the energy system that drives the restoration between intervals or between workouts.

Why would I want to implement this training?

The aerobic system in terms of how we utilize it here at OC and the OC Sports Performance program is programmed usually on Wednesdays and some Saturdays. We do a lot of different workouts in attempts to keep the training “fresh”.

These are the workouts that are usually 30-45 minutes long and completed at conversational pace. Conversational pace is the ability to have a conversation without thinking about the work you are completing. If you are thinking about what you are doing it probably means you are going too hard.

For those of you who wear an apple watch or garmin watch – aerobic training is done for most people at a heart rate of 135-150 to 155. Again for most people. There are a lot of different ways you can “test” this but here is a decent article describing heart rate training.

Why does everyone need aerobic training and aerobic fitness?

There is an ever increasing amount of studies showing that V02 max is the most important predictor of all cause mortality. Heart disease is one of the biggest causes of death in the United States. Working on this type of fitness will decrease your risk of heart disease. In addition, building this aerobic base will help your V02 max which in turn helps lower your resting heart rate.

Lowering your resting heart rate means your heart is doing less work just keeping you alive. It also means that it takes more work for your heart rate to increase. Quite simply you are in better shape.

What does this all mean?

Aerobic training will help you perform better in both CrossFit and sport. Also it will help you stay in shape longer. The stress level induced from aerobic training is also easier to recover from.  So that you are able to train more often.

Finally, this means you shouldn’t be skipping your aerobic training. Instead you should be utilizing aerobic training on Wednesdays to help you recover, extend your life, lower your resting heart rate and improve your performance in anaerobic training.
